What is a Expanded Lobster Claw?

It's not a scary creature that you'll find lurking in the deep ocean - it's actually a Heliconia latispatha, an herbaceous perennial that can be found in the wild.

This unique plant has a long, fleshy stalk that supports a bright red 'claw' made up of several large, showy flowers.

The Expanded Lobster Claw typically grows in moist, shady areas near waterfalls or streams, and blooms from late spring to early summer.

If you're lucky enough to see one in person, be sure to take some photos - they're sure to make your friends and family jealous!
