The Japanese squirrel ( Sciurus lis) is a tree squirrel found on the islands of Japan and some surrounding smaller islands. It lives in forests as well as suburban areas such as parks. It eats nuts, seeds and fruits. The average life span for them is 2-3 years but they can live up to 10 years in captivity.
They tend to gather in groups and like to make their homes inside hollowed trunks and other types of holes they find, however once mating season comes around they will fight over any available space that has one opening big enough for them all to fit into at once. They are very territorial creatures and can be observed chasing each other away from food sources or sleeping spots if another tries to encroach on their territory
