A Galapagos Tortoise is a large, terrestrial turtle found only on the Galapagos Islands. These turtles can weigh up to 400 pounds and have a lifespan of more than 100 years. The tortoises are herbivorous and feed mainly on cactus, grasses, and leaves. They can also swim well and often cross the islands in search of food.
The Galapagos Tortoise is an iconic species that is heavily protected by law. Their populations were once in decline, but thanks to conservation efforts they are now starting to rebound. These magnificent creatures are a must-see for any visitor to the Galapagos Islands.
